Scanship has been nominated for the Norwegian Export Award 2018, which is awarded by The Norwegian Export Credit Guarantee Agency, GIEK, and Innovation Norway. The jury’s key evaluation criteria are profitability, export as a share of revenue and the innovativeness of the product and market.
Scanship is promoting the importance of implementing strict regulations to protect the oceans from pollution. Their technology provides tried and tested solutions for cleaner oceans.
“Plastic in the ocean gets a lot of attention, but the problem related to acid water due to increased CO2 emissions and the dumping of sewage is also a huge problem”, says Henrik Badin, CEO of Scanship. “We have an unsatisfactory regulatory framework for discharges at sea in Norway. For example, in our view, dumping waste as close to the coast as current legislation permits should not be allowed. Technology is available, but as long as it is allowed to contaminate, someone will always continue to do so”, Badin further adds.
Among Scanships largest customers are Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, TUI, Viking Ocean Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages. The cruise industry is growing in terms of number of passengers and the interest in environmental solutions on-board ships was boosted in the early 2000s in connection with stricter environmental requirements in Alaska, and later in 2010 with stricter regulations also in the Baltic Sea.
More or less all of Scanship’s environmental solutions are exported. Over the last years, as the cruise industry has grown there has also been more construction in Norway, and the company now sees more and more of their solutions returning to Norway in connection with assembly.
